EDITORIAL\Brown's boondoggle\New speaker wants to unload the Assembly's limousines.

THE state Assembly most certainly should get rid of the three fancy Cadillacs purchased by the Assembly Rules Committee primarily for the use of former Assembly Speaker Willie Brown The name Willie Brown may refer to:
  • Willie Brown (politician) (born 1934), Mayor of San Francisco (1996–2004), Speaker of the California State Assembly (1980–1995)
  • Willie Brown (football player) (born 1940), American football Hall-of-Fame cornerback
. They are symbols of an era that thankfully has come to an end.

The state has no business indulging in such extravagances - each of the three Caddys has a leather interior, a compact disc player compact disc player nlector m or reproductor m de discos compactos

and a cellular phone. This is a state where the voters have turned down bond issues for things like public schools, universities, rapid transit rapid transit, transportation system designed to allow passenger travel within or throughout an urban area, usually employing surface, elevated, or underground railway systems or some combination of these. , parks, etc., because they suspected their representatives were wasting money. A lot of voters probably will be more inclined than ever to feel that they have been taken for a ride now that the existence of Cadillacs - they cost $121,000 in 1994 - is common knowledge.

Indeed, Californians have made it loud and clear that they are totally against this kind of spending, especially by the Legislature for the Legislature, when they approved Proposition 140 in 1990. In addition to establishing term limits for most elected officials, Proposition 140 sharply reduced the Legislature's budget.

Further, the era of imperial speakers such as Brown is over (Proposition 140's term limits will ensure that). What's more, many of the powers once held by the speaker have been transferred to the Assembly Rules Committee.

Newly elected Speaker Curt Pringle Curtis L. "Curt" Pringle (born June 27, 1959), is a politician from the U.S. state of California. Pringle, a conservative/libertarian Republican and onetime Speaker of the California State Assembly, is currently Mayor of Anaheim, California and runs his own public relations and , R-Garden Grove, is leading the campaign to get rid of the cars. He says that his 1991 Dodge Spirit The Dodge Spirit was introduced in January 1989 as a mid-size 5/6 passenger sedan. It immediately replaced the similarly sized 600.[1] Many automotive references also regard the Spirit as the de facto  from the Assembly fleet will serve his purposes just fine. It should.

Meanwhile, Assemblyman as·sem·bly·man

, D-San Francisco, a longtime ally of Brown, said that that transporting a visiting king and queen in a garden-variety Dodge would not be not such a good idea.

Well, there is a way out for the Assembly if it ever has to roll out the red carpet for a VIP and provide transportation to match: It can always do what teen-age boys do when they want to impress prom dates - rent a limo.
