Los Angeles County firefighters arrived at the scene initially but specialized units from Air Force Plant 42 had to be called in to deal with the oil fire.

The explosion cast a glow that could be seen more than 10 miles away, easily visible to motorists in the sparsely populated Acton region near the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. Edison spokesman Steve Conroy said one of the transformers apparently failed and ignited a bath of mineral oil the transformer sits in. Fire officials said that explosion subsequently ignited two other transformers.

``It is a fairly large piece of equipment and it does contain mineral oil,'' Conroy said. ``Obviously, the mineral oil is flammable but it does not pose a health risk.''

Conroy said one worker was at the facility when failure occurred, but was unharmed.

Once the fire is out, Conroy said, Edison would begin assessing the damage.

``We're looking at isolating the substation and routing power around it,'' he said.
