EDDIE ROSA STILL SWINGS.

  • Dennis McCarthy MBE (radio presenter), British radio presenter

I just met the guy I want to be when I grow up and retire.

His name's Eddie Rosa, a sweetheart of a guy. Six days a week, you can find him over at the Woodland Hills Country Club where he's known as ``The Legend.''

He got the moniker (1) A name, title or alias. See alias.

(2) A COM object that is used to create instances of other objects. Monikers save programmers time when coding various types of COM-based functions such as linking one document to another (OLE). See COM and OLE.
by making 14 holes in one over the years at the private golf club - the latest one only a few weeks ago, at age 80.

Yeah, 14 - and every one of them in front of playing partners who signed his scorecard and swore up and down they weren't lying.

``Eddie once had four (holes in one) in a 16-month period, and started aiming away from the hole because he was getting tired of having to buy everyone drinks afterwards,'' joked Kerry Hopps, the club's head pro.

I wanted to see The Legend up close and personal, so I played the back nine Wednesday morning with Eddie and a couple of his golfing buddies, Sol Liebster, 70, and Ray Screbant, 56.

I'm not much of a golfer. I shoot about 90, lying a lot.

To their credit - and as most close golfing buddies should - Sol and Ray showed The Legend no respect or mercy.

``Hey, Legend, you gonna make another hole in one today for the reporter?'' Sol yelled on Eddie's backswing back·swing

the shot but put the next one just 10 feet from the hole, sinking the putt for par.

Like a pro, he picked up his bag and started walking to the 16th. The Legend never rides. He always walks.

``The way I figure it, everyday I walk 18, I add a day to my life,'' Eddie said.

At that rate, Sol figures his buddy should live to be about 120.

``Look at him, he's amazing,'' Sol said as I got back into the cart after putting out for a double bogey Verb 1. double bogey - to shoot two strokes over par

Eddie, wearing tennis shorts, is already walking briskly up a steep hill Steep Hill is a popular tourist street in the historic city of Lincoln, UK.

to the next tee, not even breathing hard after 15 holes.

He's 80 and walking. I'm 57 and riding. Figure it out.

Tuesday and Thursday mornings, Eddie's on the tennis courts at Balboa Park Balboa Park is the name of several municipal parks, including the following:

, playing three sets of doubles with his tennis pals before heading over to the club's driving range to spend a few hours practicing his short game and drives.

Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, he's out walking 18 holes with his golfing pals, still shooting around his age on a good day.

On Sunday, he rests - with his wife, June.

Eddie's a dream husband, June says. Never gets underfoot or has to be kicked off the couch. ``And he does yard work,'' she said.

When Eddie made his 12th hole in one, June got him one of those personalized license plates that read - 12HLSN1 - 12 holes in one.

When he made his 13th, he bought his buddies a round at the so-called 19th hole, then went over to the local Department of Motor Vehicles In the United States of America, Department of Motor Vehicles (or DMV) is a commonly used name of the government agency of a U.S. state which administers the registration of automobiles (e.g., by issuing license plates), and/or the licensing of drivers (e.g.  office to update his license plate to 13HLSN1.

A few weeks ago, after his 14th, he went back again. ``I think I'm starting to drive them a little crazy at the DMV DMV

,'' he said.

Not that he likes to brag, Eddie says, but he was out driving with June one Sunday when they found themselves behind a car with the license plate 2HLSIN1.

The Legend couldn't help himself. He sped up, passed the guy, and pulled back into the lane right in front of him.

``Pretty soon, the guy was honking his horn and giving me the thumbs up,'' said The Legend, smiling.

It is an accomplishment to be proud of - 14 holes in one. Most hackers dream of one. Most get none.

Success is nothing new to his dad, says Eddie's son, Jerry, who's an entertainer.

``I learned from the best, my father,'' he said, scattering a dozen old photos of his dad with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Benny Goodman Noun 1.  hole-in-one legend, used to be a big band legend - playing lead clarinet for more than 30 years with the biggest bands and acts of the era before he retired.

``He was so nervous about this interview with you, and I asked him why,'' his wife said. ``You've been sitting in front of TV cameras your whole life, why are you nervous about an interview now?''

Because that was work and this is golf, The Legend says.

And, as any hacker will tell you, golf is a lot more nerve-racking.
