ECR, HART PLAY TO AN UNEVEN TIE; CONQUISTADORES DOMINATE, BUT INDIANS HOLD ON : ECR 0, HART 0.Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer One team had numerous scoring opportunities and a defense that rarely allowed the ball near its own goal. But the other team had the luck, leaving both sides with the same result. In a nonleague game dominated by the El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:
After producing multiple goals in most of their first nine games, the Indians (7-2-1) could manage only brief spurts of offense against the defending City champions. Reynish played college soccer for University of California Santa Barbara from 2002-2006, sitting out between his freshman a steady dose of shots to fend off Verb 1. fend off - prevent the occurrence of; prevent from happening; "Let's avoid a confrontation"; "head off a confrontation"; "avert a strike" deflect, forefend, forfend, head off, avert, stave off, ward off, avoid, debar, obviate with increasing frequency as the game continued. ``Kyle had a great game,'' Hart coach Ron Lindberg said of the sophomore, in his first season with the Indians after playing basketball as a freshman. ``It was definitely his best game yet. Reynish made 13 saves, but the aid of his defenders and the Conquistadores' inability to get the ball to go where they wanted near the goal were equally significant in preserving the shutout. Consider: In the first half, ECR's Yan Falkinston dribbled toward the goal and crossed the ball in front of the net as Reynish fell down. But instead of being kicked in for a score, the ball rolled harmlessly past the open goal. Early in the second half, Jason Lara weaved past two Hart defenders to take a shot Reynish could not reach, but the ball skimmed skim v. skimmed, skim·ming, skims v.tr. 1. a. A series of throw-ins that followed were either punched away by Reynish or cleared by Hart defenders. Zach Greenberg crossed the ball to Lara at the base of the goal, but Lara's shot went off the side of his foot and wide. In the closing minutes, a throw-in by Ian Kogan put the ball deep in Hart territory and set up a shot that slipped through the hands of a leaping Reynish. Again the ball was cleared without any damage. ``Really, for as banged-up as we are, we didn't play that bad,'' Lindberg said. ``We are pretty lucky.'' The Indians had some bad breaks of their own. Three starters, including senior sweeper Rafael Gonzalez, left the game with injuries in the first half. That ment seniors Chris Ciccone and Jared Bazar were thrust into action even though they just returned to the team this week after winning a Southern Section title with Hart's football team. Ciccone and Bazar sat out Monday's practice in an effort to rest their nagging leg injuries and Lindberg hoped to give them the entire week off. Bazar was one of the few Indians who figured out how to get around ECR defender Zach Feldman and almost headed in a shot late in the game. ``They just sucked it up and did a great job,'' Lindberg said. ``Give 'em a couple weeks and you'll see what they can really do. They're amazing.'' CAPTION(S): 2 photos PHOTO (1) Hart's Max Dominguez (21) and El Camino Real's Mauricio Ocampo battle for the ball.
