ECOGEN TO COLLABORATE ON BIORATIONAL INSECTICIDES WITH LEADING CHINESE AGRICULTURE COMPANY

LANGHORNE, Pa., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Ecogen Inc. (NASDAQ: EECN) today announced it has signed a letter of intent with China National Green Food Corporation, a division of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and the commercial arm of China Green Food Development Center, to evaluate the commercial opportunities and the potential to produce biorational insecticides including Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)- based products in the People's Republic of China.
"China provides a significant market opportunity for Bt and other biorational products," said John L. McIntyre, Ecogen's vice president for business development and international distribution. "The Bt market in China appears to have grown during each of the past several years. We believe Ecogen technology can further increase Bt use in China. Further, the potential for Ecogen to produce Bt products in China could provide Ecogen with a more efficient means to ship its products to Ecogen's distributors throughout Asia."
According to the terms of the letter of intent, Ecogen and China National Green Food plan to cooperate to support the research and development activities performed under the direction of Professor Ziniu Yu at Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan. Professor Yu has established a collection of more than 1,000 Bt strains found in China that will be made available for Ecogen's evaluation as a part of the R&D program. Professor Yu will study the efficacy of the University's Bt strains on the Japanese beetle and Heliothis, a significant pest on cotton worldwide.
Currently, Ecogen has one of the largest libraries of insecticidal Bt strains worldwide, numbering more than 9,000 strains. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a naturally occurring bacterium, found in the soil, which produces an insecticidal protein effective against certain insect species.
"When finalized, this agreement will establish a relationship between Ecogen and leading Bt researchers in China," said Bertold Fridlender, Ph.D., managing director of Ecogen Israel Partnership. "We believe Green Food will be changing the agricultural industry as well as the farming practices throughout China."
"We are looking forward to working with Ecogen and its Bt-based pesticides," said Jiang Duan Liu, general manager of China National Green Food Corporation. "The potential of biorational products is expected to increase as environmental concerns move into the forefront of the Chinese governmental and regulatory agendas."
China National Green Food Corporation was founded to improve the quality of how food is produced in China and to develop products that use natural, environmentally compatible ingredients. The China Green Food Development Center monitors and approves the processing and ingredients of products in accordance with nutritional and hygienic standards set forth by the organization. Food products produced by these standards are currently sold through national food outlets and Green Food service centers.
