ECOGEN LICENSES AGENT FOR CONTROL OF POST HARVEST ROT FROM THE USDA

LANGHORNE, Pa., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Ecogen Inc. (NASDAQ: EECN) today announced it has licensed from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) a microorganism strain for control of post harvest rot in fruits and vegetables. This is one of two yeast strains being developed by Ecogen Israel Partnership (EIP) for the control of post harvest rot.
"Because of new EPA regulations, growers and packing houses are now limited in the chemical pesticides which they can use to control post harvest rot," said John L. McIntyre, vice president for business development and international distribution for Ecogen. "We believe we can develop a cost-effective and efficacious biological pesticide treatment for storage diseases that will ensure consumers of fresh produce that is free of chemical residues. In addition to U.S. markets, there are significant opportunities in the global biopesticide market in regions of Europe and Asia."
This microorganism, Candida oleophila, is a yeast which protects fruit from spoiling during storage, and will be developed by Ecogen for Ecogen Technologies I Inc. (ETech). ETech is an independent company recently organized by Ecogen to fund six research and development activities, including the post harvest rot control program.
Ecogen is currently evaluating the strain's efficacy at a pilot plant fruit processing facility in Israel. The initial results of this testing are positive, and the company's goal is to have full scale packing plant trials later this year.
Ecogen Inc. is an agricultural biotechnology company specializing in biological pest control. Ecogen has developed and is marketing a number of novel and proprietary biopesticides, including Cutlass(R) bioinsecticide for vegetables, and tree, nut and vine crops; Condor(R) bioinsecticide for vegetables, cotton, and soybeans; Foil(R) potato bioinsecticide; Otinem(R) bioinsecticide; and Collego(R) rice bioherbicide. The company recently expanded its product portfolio with the acquisition of Scentry, providing Ecogen with pheromone-based Bee-Scent(TM), Attract 'n Kill(TM) and NoMate(R). The company is also developing products for corn, home/garden and ornamental use as well as biofungicides including products for the control of powdery mildew and post harvest rot diseases.
