ECOGEN BIOINSECTICIDE PRODUCTS REGISTERED IN CHINA; APPROVAL IS COMPANY'S FIRST IN CHINA, AN OVER $350 MILLION MARKET

LANGHORNE, Pa., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Ecogen Inc. (NASDAQ: EECN) today announced it has received a new product registration from the People's Republic of China to market two formulations of Ecogen's successful Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-based Cutlass(R) and Condor(R) bioinsecticides. Roussel-Uclaf, Ecogen's marketing partner in China and one of the world's largest suppliers of insecticides, expects to begin selling one of these environmentally compatible products, Condor, this year for use on vegetables.
"These registrations, our first in China, further validate the efficacy of our Bt-based bioinsecticides and the global need for biorational pesticides," said John L. McIntyre, Ecogen's vice president for business development and international distribution. "Our Bt product line has been a consistent top performer."
"China is a key country in our global strategy. Not only does it represent a significant market opportunity, it also expands our presence in the Pacific Rim," said John E. Davies, chairman and chief executive officer. "China is the 14th largest consumer of agricultural chemicals in the world with consumption of insecticides totaling more than $350 million."
Condor and Cutlass will be marketed under Roussel-Uclaf's brand names EcoTech(TM) Pro and EcoTech(TM) Bio, respectively. EcoTech Pro, an oil flowable formulation of Condor, will be used primarily to protect vegetables from diamondback moths, a significant pest throughout Asia.
"We are excited about being able to offer Ecogen's Bt-based biopesticides in China, a country that is embracing biorational agricultural pest control products and integrated pest management programs," said Bernard Convent, director of research, Agrovet Division of Roussel-Uclaf. "Ecogen's products certainly fulfill this increasing demand in China."
