ECKERD OFFERS NEWEST ENTRY IN SPECIALTY TOOTHPASTE COMPETITION -- NEW PERIGEL ORAL CARE SYSTEM

ECKERD OFFERS NEWEST ENTRY IN SPECIALTY TOOTHPASTE COMPETITION --
 NEW PERIGEL ORAL CARE SYSTEM
ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Southeast's largest drug store chain, Eckerd Drug of Largo, Fla., just introduced the nation's newest and most successful specialty toothpaste, PeriGel oral care system from Zila Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ZILA).
PeriGel is already widely recommended by dentists and hygienists concerned about patients' teeth and gums. PeriGel is specially formulated to combat periodontal disease -- a group of disorders that attack gums, teeth and bone in up to 90 percent of the population. Periodontal disease is as widespread as the common cold; it is the most common chronic form of human infection.
Zila launched PeriGel in Zila's home state of Arizona last July. In one month, its was outselling the number one competitor throughout the state. Even as Zila was preparing for a broader West Coast PeriGel roll-out, Southeast powerhouse Eckerd Drug placed its order for all 1,678 of its stores.
"We find that our customers are looking for therapeutic benefits in their oral care regimen," said Cindy Robinson, Eckerd senior buyer. "PeriGel fits the bill, combining ingredients that dentists and hygienists have been recommending for years."
Dentists and hygienists have told patients with even the mildest cases of periodontal disease to brush their teeth with a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
Today, there are many new baking soda toothpastes, but they only deliver half the remedy for periodontal disease. (Some even lack fluoride.) PeriGel, which has two tubes in each package, is the only choice. One tube contains a minty baking soda paste with fluoride; the other tube has a clear blue hydrogen peroxide gel. Equal amounts from the two tubes are applied on the toothbrush.
When PeriGel's ingredients combine in the mouth, a chemical reaction produces a foam of oxygen bubbles that surge into gum pockets, lifting away food particles and destroying harmful bacteria. PeriGel whitens teeth, reduces plaque and tartar, fights cavities and freshens the breath. It even works well with electric toothbrushes.
And, there's a reward for those who take special care of their ailing gums: inflamed and infected gums and bone can heal and actually regenerate.
