ECKERD CORPORATION TO ACQUIRE CROWN DRUGS

 CLEARWATER, Fla., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Eckerd Corporation (NYSE: ECK) announced today that an agreement has been reached to acquire Crown Drugs, a 19-unit chain in Winston-Salem, N.C. Eckerd currently runs 178 retail drug stores in North Carolina and the acquired stores will be operated as Eckerd Drug Stores following close of the transaction in late November. The company did not disclose terms of the agreement.
 In announcing the agreement, Stewart Turley, Eckerd chairman and chief executive officer said, "The acquisition of Crown Drugs is an excellent addition to our company and a solid merge with our existing operations in the Winston-Salem area. We look forward to welcoming both current Crown employees and customers to the Eckerd family of drug stores."
 Turley said that virtually all Crown drug store employees would retain jobs with Eckerd. Turley added, "We remain committed to providing convenient shopping for our many loyal customers and believe that they will ultimately benefit by our increased presence in Winston- Salem, especially as President Clinton's national health care agenda unfolds and customers seek out the best providers for their needs."
 Eckerd Corporation operates 1,691 drug stores in 13 states. In addition, Eckerd operates 405 Eckerd Express Photo labs, 47 Visionworks optical superstores, 30 Eckerd Optical Centers and Insta-Care Pharmacy Services, which provides pharmaceutical care to institutions.
