ECD ANNOUNCES JOINT PROGRAM WITH POLAROID FOR LOW-COST OPTICAL DISKS

TROY, Mich., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. ("ECD") (OTC: ENER) announced today that it is working with Polaroid Corporation (NYSE: PRD) to develop low-cost, high storage capacity removable optical storage media which will be applicable to electronic photography and other imaging applications as well as a wide range of computer storage applications. Polaroid also has acquired the worldwide exclusive rights to coat ECD's proprietary optical memory material, i.e., Ovonic phase change media, on substrates manufactured by continuous web embossed processes.
The media can be in the form of a small diameter (approximately 2" diameter) optical disk which can be inserted into a special disk drive compatible with the PCMCIA form factor. The new disk will have a potential storage capacity of over 100 megabytes compared to the 1.44 megabyte capacity of the 3.5 inch floppy disk used in today's personal computers and will have a cost per megabyte substantially less than that of current floppy disks.
The manufacture of substrates would require the use of Polaroid's proprietary flexible continuous web embossed manufacturing process. The substrates then would be coated with ECD's Ovonic phase change media. Polaroid's flexible continuous web embossed manufacturing process provides for a significant reduction in production costs compared to conventional injection molding processes in common use today. ECD's Ovonic phase change media which can be either write once or erasable provides a low-cost state-of-the-art recording media.
ECD is a leader in the synthesis of new materials and the development of advanced production technologies and innovative products. Since its founding in 1960, ECD's research and development efforts have focused on disordered and amorphous materials. ECD has developed its Ovonic materials, production technology and products in the areas of energy, information and synthetic materials.
