EBMUD TO USE HORSE TEAMS TO CLEAR FUELBREAK

EBMUD TO USE HORSE TEAMS TO CLEAR FUELBREAK
OAKLAND, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- To minimize damage to

plant and animal environments, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) will use teams of draft horses beginning June 10 (Wednesday) to clear fuelbreaks in the East Bay hills. When work is completed about mid-July, vegetation that can fuel fires will be substantially reduced on the District-owned portion of the urban-wildlife interface.
Using draft-horse teams for brush and tree management is more environmentally sensitive than using timber-harvesting equipment, which is the usual practice.
EBMUD will remove 2,800 second-growth eucalyptus trees and seven Monterey pines that range from 20 to 40 feet tall. Trees will be felled and cut into manageable lengths so that four-horse draft teams can skid the logs along various routes to avoid disturbing plants and animals. Fire resistant native species such as redwoods, oaks, bay- laurel and north coastal scrub will not be removed.
Two teams of four horses each will work on the District's portion (2.0 miles) of the 13.8 miles of fuelbreak in the Oakland-Berkeley hills. Major improvements will be made in the Grizzly Peak and Fish Ranch Road area. Pine stumps will be stripped to eliminate bark beetle habitat. Live trees being used as nesting sites will not be removed. All cut material that is not removed will be chipped and spread on the site. Any areas with substantial ground disturbance will be rehabilitated by the contractor and EBMUD watershed staff.
Herbicides will not be used to kill eucalyptus stumps. Instead, EBMUD will rely on repeated elimination of sprouting eucalyptus suckers until the stump can no longer produce new shoots.
