EBENEZER BUTTERICK TOASTED ON 166TH BIRTHDAY
COMPANY EXECUTIVES HONOR MEMORY OF FOUNDER
A tradition begun 88 years ago will be commemorated this week by key employees of The Butterick Company as they gather to celebrate the 166th birthday of their founder, Ebenezer Butterick.
Known unofficially as the patron saint of home sewing, the venerable Ebenezer who invented the paper pattern in 1863, will be toasted with champagne, a very large cake and plaque, announcing that henceforth the company's 12th floor conference space will be designated the "Ebenezer Butterick Room."
"Although the actual birth date is May 29, 1826, Ebenezer always liked being ahead if his time," said John Lehmann, chairman and CEO, explaining why the celebration was being held a day early.
The ritual was started in 1904, shortly after the founder's death when the landmark Butterick Building was completed.
Abandoned during the Depression, the annual ceremony was reinstituted in 1983 to celebrate the company's management buyout and the return to private ownership. "Ebenezer's entrepreneurial spirit continues to inspire Butterick," added Lehmann, who pointed out that the company's current expansion, in the U.S. and abroad, was a continuation of a trend established by Butterick in the 1870s.
Today, Butterick is the world leader in patterns, producing the Vogue, Butterick and See & Sew brands. The company also publishes seven magazines and is a leader in the personalized greeting card industry with its Masterpiece and Brett-Forer lines.
