EBAA Iron announces 2007 plant opening.

Mount Co., Irondale, Ala., engineered the project, and the new facility is being constructed by local contractors in the Eastland area. Construction began in October 2005.

"Our company continues to grow," said Earl T. Bradley, president of EBAA Iron Inc. "We are proud of our people and this new facility, and we are excited about what this expansion will mean for EBAA Iron."

Dick Meade, EBAA's manager of plant engineering, said the new facility will stretch across 58,500 sq. ft. and have four distinct sectors--two molding areas, a coreroom and a facility for scraphandling and melting that includes two coreless furnaces. There also will be areas for shakeout and cleaning to allow for recycling of gating and sand before the company's products are moved to another building for finishing, powder-coating and final assembly.

"The construction of our new facility is also driven by capacity needs," Meade said. "To improve our existing facility would have meant downtime, and we could not have kept up with demand for our products."

Meade, the company requires about 2.6 tons of metal/ hour to meet their current customer demands. The new facility will add 4 tons/hour to their melt capacity, leaving ample room for any increases in demand.

The new facility complements molding lines in EBAA's existing Eastland plant, which manufactures products at or under 20 in. in diameter. The new nobake molding facility will produce 24- and 30-in. retainers on an automatic molding line. All rings larger than 30 in. will be cast on a separate molding line, along with the company's flexible expansion joints.

Meade said the new facility also will have improved ergonomics ergonomics, the engineering science concerned with the physical and psychological relationship between machines and the people who use them. "This will be a more pleasant place to work," he said. "For instance, there will be a robot function for heavy lifting. We have essentially built a building inside a building to separate our noisy, dusty operations.
