The board voted unanimously at Monday's meeting to appoint Webb as the new superintendent under a two-year contract that will pay an annual salary of $80,456. The appointment will take effect Aug. 1.

``I'm excited and honored to have been trusted in this position,'' said Webb, a 52-year-old resident of Palmdale. ``My objective is to provide stability for the district, with an emphasis on improving reading.''

Gastineau, a longtime Antelope Valley educator, announced in March that he would retire in August. Gastineau, 59, worked in education in the Antelope Valley for 38 years and has been the top administrator at Eastside since May 1992. He is retiring for medical reasons, on the advice of his doctor.

Gastineau is one of six Antelope Valley superintendents in the past year who has left or will soon be leaving their posts. The others were at Lancaster, Mojave, Southern Kern, Westside and Wilsona.

``She's very well-qualified, and I'm delighted with the board's choice,'' Gastineau said. ``She's an excellent administrator and will serve the board very well.''

Before becoming assistant superintendent at the three-school, 2,200-student district, Webb served as principal at Tierra Bonita Bonita (Spanish and Portuguese for "beautiful") is the name of:
