EASTER SEALS AND CENTURY 21 REAL ESTATE CORP. LAUNCH FIRST EASY ACCESS HOUSING DESIGN COMPETITION

CHICAGO, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Easter Seal Society and Century 21 Real Estate Corp. announce the first national competition to honor innovative housing designs that accommodate the needs of people with disabilities and older Americans aging into disability. The Easter Seal/CENTURY 21 Easy Access Housing Design Competition was developed to create a broader awareness of the growing need for accessible and adaptable housing design.
The competition, undertaken in cooperation with the joint Aging Design Research Program of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, invites architects and builders to submit accessible housing designs for new and existing facilities. Entries of all scales and types are eligible, from large multi-unit developments to single-room environments and from renovation and remodels to new construction.
``Easter Seals and the Century 21 system are proud to offer this opportunity to architects throughout the nation,'' said James E. Williams Jr., president and CEO of the National Easter Seal Society. ``Accessible housing is critical to people with disabilities who live independently, and our nation's architects can make an enormous difference through their work to adapt existing structures and design new homes.''
Entries will be screened by an AIA jury of architects and accessibility specialists; criteria weigh accessibility features with quality of design.
Winning designs will be exhibited in Chicago at the AIA National Convention in June 1993. These winning designs and profiles on their designers also will be included in an illustrated catalog that will be available from the National Easter Seal Society.
``This design contest and the resulting design catalog will heighten awareness among architects, builders and others in related industries,'' said Richard J. Loughlin, president and CEO of Century 21 Real Estate Corp. ``More than this, it will provide consumers with the most up-to- date accessible housing designs available.''
Since the launch of the ``Easy Access Housing for Easier Living'' campaign more than a year ago, nearly 75,000 consumers have requested the ``Easy Access'' checklist brochure from Easter Seals, which identifies features that make a home accessible or adaptable. The program mobilized the real estate and related industries to better accommodate people with disabilities or older adults in their homes.
Submission procedures and entry forms for the design awards are available by sending a self-addressed, stamped, business-sized envelope to:
