In Los Angeles, Mahony's Blessing of the Animals has become a customary part of the Easter weekend.

At the Mission, celebrities such as Erik Estrada, Tom Arnold and People Magazine editor Christina Ferrari helped dish out thousands of plates of ham, corn and mashed potatoes to the homeless.

Children were given Easter baskets and listened to readings of the Easter story, said event spokeswoman Julie Fosselman.

``This is a fantastic event that offers up hope to homeless men, women and children,'' Fosselman said.
