EARTH DAY IS EVERY DAY AT SAFEWAY
BELLEVUE, Wash., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of Earth Day

1992, Safeway (NYSE: SWY) said today it is continuing its corporate commitment of preserving the environment. Being a recycler for over a quarter of a century has strengthened the company's commitment to meet the changing needs of customers in Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho and Milton-Freewater, Ore.
In February, Safeway introduced its Environmental Options program which encourages customers to become better informed consumers. All Seattle Division Safeway stores now offer Environmental Options shelf tags which guide customers to products that are making strides to address environmental concerns. In addition, Safeway has published an environmental flyer titled, "Environmental Options, Making Environmental Choices Simple" for all customers describing Safeway's programs and commitment relating to the environment. This helpful pamphlet is provided in all Safeway stores at no charge.
As a corporation and throughout its five operating states, Safeway has been the largest retail recycler of cardboard for a quarter of a century. On average, 1,841 tons of cardboard are recycled each month. For nearly ten years, Safeway has offered its customers the option of recycling glass, aluminum and newspapers through recycle bins located at 76 stores. In Montana and Idaho, Safeway is actively working to set up new recycling bins.
Safeway offers customers its bag rebate program in all stores subtracting 5 cents off a customer's grocery bill for every bag brought in for re-use. Two years ago, Safeway introduced mesh and canvas bags, offering an alternative to paper or plastic bags. The company's paper bags are made from recycled materials, and once used may be deposited in the paper bag recycling bins at any Safeway store. In addition, Safeway offers plastic bag recycling for plastic grocery sacks in all stores.
On the corporate side, all Safeway advertisements, in-house flyers and publications are now printed on recycled paper. In the Bellevue Division Office, scrap metal from the Distribution Center and aluminum cans from lunchrooms are collected and recycled. Styrofoam cups in the offices have been replaced by ceramic mugs. All office and computer paper is recycled.
To meet the changing needs of the environmental and their customers, Safeway employees have come together forming environmental committees. Employees work actively together to generate ideas for ways Safeway can better preserve the environment through all facets of its operation. To celebrate Earth Day, all Bellevue Division Office, Supply Plant and Distribution Center employees are encouraged to carpool, ride the bus or walk to work on April 22. In addition, a collection of Safeway volunteers will be spending the afternoon of Earth Day cleaning up the area surrounding the Bellevue headquarters located at 1121 124th Avenue N.E., Bellevue, Wash.
Safeway's commitment will not end with Earth Day, as a matter of fact, it will continue for years to come. Safeway will endeavor to educate its friends and neighbors about the benefits of environmentally sensitive choices through advertisements and employee bulletins. Earth Day may come only once a year, but the neighbors at Safeway have made a commitment to put Earth-friendly practices into use every day.
The Seattle Division of Safeway Inc. is made up of 178 stores in Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho and Milton-Freewater, Ore.
