EARLY TIMES DONATES WORLD'S LARGEST MINT JULEP CUP TO KENTUCKY DERBY MUSEUM

LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- It stands nearly five feet tall, measures 43 inches in diameter, and holds up to 100 gallons of the Kentucky Derby's most famous libation, the mint julep.
It's the "World's Largest Mint Julep Cup," and beginning Friday, April 30, it will be on permanent display at the Kentucky Derby Museum. Located on the grounds of the internationally famous Churchill Downs in Louisville, the museum was founded in 1985, and its displays and exhibits depict the history and tradition of horse racing and the Thoroughbred industry.
The oversized mint julep cup was donated to the museum by Early Times Kentucky Whisky. It will become part of an exhibit that explains the history of the mint julep and the revered role it has played as a traditional Derby drink. The Early Times World's Largest Mint Julep Cup is a modified replica of a silver julep cup, which is the traditional vessel for this beverage. Every year at the Derby, Churchill Downs' own silver cups are filled with Early Times mint juleps as officials and horse owners gather in the President's Suite for the traditional post-race toasts.
And they are not alone in their enjoyment. According to Harry M. Stevens Catering at Churchill Downs, more than 85,000 Early Times Kentucky Mint Juleps (the official mint julep of the Downs) are served to racing fans there during Derby Week. Approximately 40,000 of those Early Times Kentucky Mint Juleps are served on Derby Day.
Early Times commissioned the World's Largest Mint Julep cup in 1991, using it as a special promotion at Kentucky Derby Festival events. Last year, the cup followed the Early Times Triple Turf Series, which coincides each year with the Triple Crown circuit. After the "World's Largest Mint Julep" was served during the Kentucky Derby celebration in Louisville, the cup was taken to Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore for the "World's Largest Black-eyed Susan," the official drink of the Preakness. Three weeks later, it was displayed as the "World's Largest Manhattan Cocktail" at New York's Belmont Race Course to celebrate the Belmont Stakes.
Follow this time-honored recipe to create a traditional mint julep:
 Early Times Mint Juleps
 1 cup sugar
 crushed ice
 1 cup water
 Early Times Kentucky Whisky(A)
 1 bunch fresh mint sprigs
To make a simple syrup, combine the sugar and water and boil for 5 minutes, without stirring. Cool. Pour over a handful of mint and gently crush the mint with a spoon. Refrigerate overnight in a closed jar. Remove mint leaves and
continue to refrigerate. This will keep for several weeks and individual juleps can be made as desired. For each serving, crush a few mint leaves in the bottom of an 8 oz. glass with crushed ice. Add 1 tablespoon of the syrup and 1 tablespoon water. Add 2 ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir gently until glass is frosted. Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint.
 (A) To make a non-alcoholic mint julep, substitute ginger ale for bourbon/whisky.
