EARLY SEASON RESIDENT UPLAND GAME BIRD REGULATIONS.QUAIL Including California (valley), mountain and Gambel's (desert) quail Oct. 16 to Jan. 30 (except for Marin, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties, which open Sept. 25). An early season for mountain quail, only in much of Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern and the Western Sierra, runs Sept. 11 to Oct. 15. 10 per day in any combination; 20 in possession. CHUKAR chukar Popular small game bird (Alectoris chukar), a species of partridge. Stocked in many countries, it is native from southeastern Europe to India and Manchuria. It has a brown back with strongly barred sides and a black-outlined whitish throat. (Red-legged partridge) Oct. 16 to Jan. 30. Six per day; 12 in possession. SAGE GROUSE sage grouse, sage hen, or sage cock: see grouse. Saturday and Sunday only, in four zones - East Lassen Zone, Central Lassen Zone, North Mono Zone, and South Mono and Inyo Zone. For Lassen zones, two per day; two per season. For Mono and Inyo zones, one per day; one per season. BLUE AND RUFFED GROUSE ruffed grouse: see grouse. ruffed grouse North American species (Bonasa umbellus) of grouse, sometimes incorrectly called a partridge. Ruffed grouse live mainly on berries, fruits, seeds, and buds but also eat much animal food. Sept. 11 to Oct. 11. Hunting limited to much of Northern California and the Western Sierra. Two per day in any combination; four in possession. WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN ptarmigan (tär`məgən): see grouse. ptarmigan Any of three or four species of grouse (genus Lagopus) of cold regions. Ptarmigan plumage changes from white in winter to gray or brown, with barring, in spring and summer. Sept. 11-19. Hunting limited to Alpine County and a portion of Mono County California and the Western Sierra. Two per day; two per season. Note: Regulations are for shotgun and crossbow, as well as for pistol or revolver for blue and ruffed grouse only.
