EARLY SEASON RESIDENT AND MIGRATORY GAME BIRD REGULATIONS.

Bird:QUAIL (California, mountain and desert)

Hunting Season: Oct. 19 to Jan. 26 (except for Marin, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino counties, which open Sept. 28). Bag limit: 10 per day; 20 in possession.

Comments: A pointing dog, like a German shorthair short·hair
n.
Either of two breeds of shorthaired cats, characterized by a slender muscular body, large head, broad muzzle, and large round eyes.
, or a flushing dog, like a

springer spaniel, is essential to a successful hunt.

Bird: CHUKAR chukar

Popular small game bird (Alectoris chukar), a species of partridge. Stocked in many countries, it is native from southeastern Europe to India and Manchuria. It has a brown back with strongly barred sides and a black-outlined whitish throat.
 (Red-legged partridge)

Hunting Season: Oct. 19 to Jan. 26 (except for Modoc and Lassen counties, which open Oct. 19 and close Dec. 29). Bag limit: Six per day; 12 in possession.

Comments: It looks like there will be less than normal numbers of chukar this

year because of poor rainfall in Southern California.

Bird: SAGE GROUSE

Hunting Season: Oct. 5-6 in North Mono, South Mono and Inyo Areas only. Bag

limit: One per day; one per season.

Comments: Good news: The largest of all grouse, it's the easiest to shoot. Bad news: The closest hunting area is Crowley Lake, north of Bishop.

Bird: BLUE AND RUFFED GROUSE ruffed grouse: see grouse.
ruffed grouse

North American species (Bonasa umbellus) of grouse, sometimes incorrectly called a partridge. Ruffed grouse live mainly on berries, fruits, seeds, and buds but also eat much animal food.

Hunting Season: Saturday to Oct. 14. Bag limit: Two blue or ruffed per day; four in possession, in the aggregate of both species.

Comments: The ruffed grouse is found only near the Oregon line, but the blue is found all down the Sierra Nevada - in wet meadows high in the range - to Lake Isabella, but it can be an athletic event to hunt them.

Bird: WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN ptarmigan (tär`məgən): see grouse.
ptarmigan

Any of three or four species of grouse (genus Lagopus) of cold regions. Ptarmigan plumage changes from white in winter to gray or brown, with barring, in spring and summer.

Hunting Season: Saturday to Sept. 22 in Alpine County and a portion of Mono

County. Bag limit: Two per day; two per season.

Comments: Likely the best area is on the east side of Yosemite National park Yosemite National Park (yōsĕm`ĭtē), 761,266 acres (308,205 hectares), E central Calif.; est. 1890 as a result of the efforts of conservationist John Muir. Located in the Sierra Nevada, it is a glacier-scoured area of great beauty; Mt. .

You've got to push them to make them fly, like a pheasant; just don't

shoot them on the ground.

Bird: BAND-TAILED PIGEON

Hunting Season: Sept. 21-29 in northern Californian counties (all other counties, Dec. 21-29). Bag limit: Two per day; two in possession.

Comments: Unfortunately, populations have suffered from the endemic disease

trichomoniasis trichomoniasis (trĭk'əmənī`əsĭs), sexually transmitted disease caused by the parasitic protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis.  for the past six years. They have been known to migrateeither down the Sierra or down the coast, traditionally congregating in

Frazier Park, Arrowhead, Laguna and Mount Palomar.

Note: For falconry falconry (fôl`kənrē, fô`–, făl`–), sport of hunting birds or small animals with falcons or other types of hawks; eagles are used in some parts of the world.  and archery regulations, consult the Department of Fish and Game's guide ``Early Season Resident and Migratory Game Bird Regulations.''
