Seventy-five cases have been reported so far, with 67 of those confirmed by lab tests. The outbreak began at the Lane County Fair The Lane County Fair is an annual celebration held in Eugene, Oregon every August featuring food, music and other entertainment. Five children remain hospitalized for treatment of HUS at Doernbecher Children's Hospital Doernbecher Children's Hospital is a children's hospital located in Portland, Oregon, and associated with Oregon Health & Science University.

Two other children were discharged Wednesday from Doernbecher: 14-month-old Sophia Johnson of Eugene and Makyah Outman, whose age and hometown weren't available.

At least one child remains hospitalized at Legacy Emanuel Children's Hospital in Portland with HUS.

HUS can cause kidney failure, require dialysis and transfusion, and in about 5 percent of cases, leads to death.

Public health investigators have traced the outbreak to the barn on the south side of the fairgrounds n. pl. 1. same as fairground.  where sheep and dairy goats were exhibited.

Interviews with sick and well fairgoers and statistical analysis showed a strong indication that children under age 6 who touched the floor in the barn got sick, said Dr. William Keene, the state epidemiologist investigating the out- break.

About half of the youngest children who got sick touched the floor in the barn, while only about 10 percent of the children who stayed well touched the floor, he said.
