E-Systems receives Army contract for Drop Zone Assembly Aid prototypes.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 28, 1995--E-Systems Montek Division, Salt Lake City, UT, has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Army Communications Electronics Command, Ft. Monmouth Monmouth, city, United States
Monmouth, city (1990 pop. 9,489), seat of Warren co., W Ill.; inc. 1852. Located in a farm area, it is a trade center with a packing plant. Manufactures include pottery, farm tools, and feed. Monmouth College is in the city.
, New Jersey, for the development and demonstration of Drop Zone Assembly Aid (DZAA) prototype units.

The estimated value of the contract is $740,000.

The contract calls for the design and development of prototype DZAAs, and includes the performance of an air-drop test to demonstrate the equipment's capability. The equipment will allow troops to locate air-dropped loads and assemble air-dropped personnel at desired locations.

The system utilizes the Global Positioning System Global Positioning System: see navigation satellite.
Global Positioning System (GPS)

Precise satellite-based navigation and location system originally developed for U.S. military use.
(GPS) to provide position information which is used to inform troops of both the direction and the distance to an assembly point. Previous non-GPS systems could only point the direction to the assembly point, without providing the distance or positioning information that is possible with a GPS-based system.

The equipment includes a small wrist-mounted locator unit worn by troops, and a beacon for the load or the assembly point. The beacon transmits over a datalink to the locators, and the locators then calculate and display the direction and distance to the beacon.

The DZAA system will prevent the loss of valuable loads during air drops and will enable troops to assemble quickly and accurately even in darkness Adv. 1. in darkness - without light; "the river was sliding darkly under the mist"
