Dysentery


Dysentery is an infection which is often considered as symptoms to other disease rather than a disease itself. It is a digestion problem and usually is considered intestinal problem that causes dehydration and mucous or blood in stool

Dysentery is an infection which is often considered as symptoms to other disease rather than a disease itself. It is a digestion problem and usually is considered intestinal problem that causes dehydration and mucous or blood in stool. In extreme cases it may lead to bloody Diarrhea besides the usual symptoms of feces disorders, cramps and abdominal pains.

Caused due to poor sanitation and contaminated water, Dysentery is mostly considered as disease to have its origin in underdeveloped countries. It may seem simple in nature but is a cause of high mortality rate among children. The death occurs due to the fact that dysentery results into lack of water and sodium content from body which is necessary for survival. Once a patient loose more than 10% of water from body, he is more likely to die. This is the reason salted water is given to the patient to recover from the disease.

Causes of Dysentery: Dysentery usually happens due to impure food or water and is inflated due to bacteria and micro-organisms present in the eatables. Once these micro-organisms are ingested in body they take their way from stomach and to intestine causing inflammation. The causes of Dysentery are Occurs due to bacteria, protozoans and parasites, contaminated water and food consumption, Inadequate sanitation and poor hygienic conditions, Certain medications for e.g. steroids or antibiotics

Types of Dysentery: Amoebic dysentery is caused by amoeba Entamoeba histolytica which usually happens due to consumption of contaminated food and water. The amoebic cyst is passed through unhygienic food and water and a cyst base is established in intestines and stomach which is passed in stool along with the mucous. Due to its spreading through food and water or simply change in environment it is also referred as ''Travelers Dysentery''. Bacillary dysentery is manly caused by the bacteria of the Shigella group. The bacteria from this group which can cause dysentery are- bacterium Shigella dysenteriae type 1 (Sd1) causes serious and epidemic dysentery while Shigella flexneri, Shigella sonnei and Shigella boydii can also cause less dangerous dysentery. However, Campylobacter & Salmonella enterica are other group of bacteria''s which can also be a causative factor for Dysentery occurrence. Bacillary dysentery can cause blood mucous in stool

Some of the major symptoms of Dysentery are as follows

Bloody, watery stools - passed frequently, Pus and mucus in human waste, Fever accompanied by weakness, Nausea and severe body aches, Severe abdominal cramps
