Baroque violinist Jaap Schroeder will be featured in a classical concert on period instruments In the historically informed performance movement, musicians perform European classical music using restored or replica versions of the instruments for which it was originally written. The program includes String Quartet string quartet

Schroeder grew up in Amsterdam, began playing the violin The violin player usually holds the instrument under the chin, supported by the left shoulder (see below for variations of this posture). The strings are sounded either by drawing the bow across them (arco), or sometimes by plucking them (pizzicato).  when he was 8 and later studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam. He has taught at the Juilliard School, Yale University, the Peabody Conservatory, the Paris Conservatory and the Schola Cantorum in Basel.

Flute recital and yoga

Flutist Laura Barron will give a guest artist recital at 8 p.m. Friday in Beall Hall.

A certified yoga instructor, Barron also will conduct a "Yoga for Musicians" workshop at 1 p.m. Thursday in Room 178 of the music school. Admission is $5, limited to 30 participants. To register, contact Steve Vacchi at 346-3748.

Barron made her solo debut at age 17 with the Boston Symphony. She has performed with Alexander Schneider's Brandenburg Ensemble, the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble and the Wilson Wind Quintet. Her debut solo CD, "Echoes of a Blue Planet," was released in 1999.

Children's concert

The University Singers will be the focus of a Children's Concert Series program at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $3 for adults, $2 for children and students or $5 for a family ticket.

Under the direction of Sharon Paul, the choral ensemble will sing "Part of Your World" and "Under the Sea" from the Disney musical "The Little Mermaid." The choir will also sing "Cindy," an American folksong, which will include fiddling and square dancing. The choir also will engage in sing-alongs with the audience.
