Dustup over rural road stretches on.Byline: COUNTY BEAT By Matt Cooper Matt Cooper may refer to:
Hulbert Lake Road is only two miles long, but for county officials, it might feel like a road that goes on forever. In 2003, Lane County considered improving the road northwest of Junction City Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley, , but decided not to after hearing from residents. Then they found paperwork that gives county workers the right to maintain the road. Now, officials are locking horns with a property owner who says the county has no business there. Everything should come to a head before spring. The 2-mile asphalt stretch in question appears to exist in a gray area between private and public status. The county never confirmed that the road matches up with survey records, but county workers have maintained it for years. County workers are drawing up plans that would give them the right to maintain the road for up to 20 feet on either side of the centerline cen·ter·line n. 1. Sonny Chickering, county engineer, said he's encountered two schools of thought along Hulbert Lake Road: Those who feel the road is private, and those who want the county to show up and keep the road clear. A public hearing will be held before spring, which is when workers would like to start knocking down weeds and brush along Hulbert Lake Road and everywhere else in the county.
