David Lubar. 2002/2003. Read by Matt Golden & Full Cast Family. 4 tapes. 6 hrs. Full Cast Audio (PO Box 6110, Syracuse, NY, 13217). 1-932076-07-7. $25.95. Cardboard; plot, author notes. JS

A full cast performance enhances this story of Chad. who is searching for his place in the world. His divorced mother (they were abandoned by his father) works all the time and wants Chad to enjoy the rest of his adolescence adolescence, time of life from onset of puberty to full adulthood. The exact period of adolescence, which varies from person to person, falls approximately between the ages 12 and 20 and encompasses both physiological and psychological changes.  (it's the summer before his senior year) and so forbids him to get a job. Chad hangs out with his friends on the boardwalk near his home but wants more. When he sees a "Bozo" (the clown clown, a comic character usually distinguished by garish makeup and costume whose antics are both humorously clumsy and acrobatic. The clown employs a broad, physical style of humor that is wordless or not as self-consciously verbal as the traditional fool or jester.  who sits in the booth above the water tank taunting passersby to dunk him) and recognizes the genius it takes to do that well, he wonders if he couldn't do it too. When the great Bozo turns out to be the man to whom his mother has just rented a room, he begins a journey in which he finds that there are always more layers than there first appear to be.

This production is well acted and benefits from great casting. The irritating hacksaw Bozo voice is so faithful to the author's description that the listener is almost as ready to dunk it (to shut him up) as are the bystanders on the boardwalk. Chad and his friends are believable be·liev·a·ble
