Duke proves he has it all as he storms back to grab the glory.

Byline: Jon Lees reports

THE wellbeing of the King George King George has referred to many kings throughout history. When used, by Americans, without further reference it most often means George III of the United Kingdom, against whom the Whigs of the American Revolution rebelled.  VI and Queen Elizabeth Queen Elizabeth, or Elizabeth, may refer to: Living people

Stakes as a championship race has been put under intense examination but the race remains in rude health and drew added vitality from the performance of Duke Of Marmalade yesterday.

What, for a moment, had looked like becoming a procession when Duke Of Marmalade swept to the front over a furlong out turned into an unexpectedly hard-fought contest in which Papal Bull, under Olivier Peslier Olivier Peslier (born: January 12, 1973 in Château-Gontier, Mayenne département, France) is a thoroughbred horse racing jockey.

Peslier competes in flat racing mainly in France but travels often around the world for the big international races.
, grabbed the lead to go a neck in front - and 1-10 in running on Betfair - only for Duke Of Marmalade to battle back and win by half a length.

By King George standards, the duel was brief but it was still memorable, the pair crossing the line nine lengths clear of Youmzain, yet again the victim of a hard-luck story hard-luck story ndramón m

a 12th at the top level, equalling the rider's best haul for a season, and despite their many triumphs, neither doubted that Duke Of Marmalade ranks among the very best they have been associated with.

"He's a very rare horse to show top form over a mile and such determination and aggression at the end of a race over a mile and a half," said O'Brien. "It's unusual. There's no doubt this is a great horse now. He only goes there and wins his races and we have seen a typical example today."

Murtagh said: "Even when it looks like all is gone he still finds more and that's why I think he's a true champion. He doesn't lack in any department. He has good speed, relaxes and has a great will to win. He's like most of the great ones I've ridden. He's on a par with Dylan Thomas Noun 1. Dylan Thomas - Welsh poet (1914-1953)

and he'll be very hard to beat this year.

"We quickened unbelievably well in the straight and I thought there was no way we'd be beat.

When Papal Bull came up to me and went a neck up I was surprised, but when I got my stick in my right hand, gave him a couple of smacks, he found top gear again. The good horses can win when all looks lost."

as a pacemaker but, even though Duke Of Marmalade was unproven at the distance, the pace was deliberately set to provide a test for the 4-6 favourite.

"We put all our cards on the table Cards on the Table is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie and first published in the UK by the Collins Crime Club in November 1936 and in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company the following year. He got to the front a little earlier than we wanted. His rhythm took him there. I was happy when Papal Bull came to him. I knew Johnny had not really gone for everything and when he did the response was great."

Duke Of Marmalade is 5-1 for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is a Group 1 flat race for three-year-old and above thoroughbred horses (excluding geldings). It is run over a distance of 2,400 metres (approximately 1 mile 4 furlongs) raced on turf at Longchamp Racecourse, Paris, France on the first Sunday in  withWilliam Hill, Totesport and Stan James but more immediately could head to York for the Juddmonte International.

"Plans will be discussed at home, but my preference would be to drop back to a mile and a quarter. Then we can train and sharpen him. There are races there like the Juddmonte and all those races."

Papal Bull, formerly owned by the Coolmore partners, was introduced into the Arc betting at 12-1 with Hills, while Youmzain, who was "turned sideways" according to Mick Channon, is 12-1 (from 9-1) with Totesport. He will head straight to Longchamp.

Peslier approved of the Arc as a target for Papal Bull but confirmed previous suspicions of the horse's commitment. He said: "We went past the other one and then he just pulled himself up. I think they want to go to the Arc and I said it's a good idea."

Gary Patchett, of the Papal Bull partnership, said: "He has three more Group 1 entries, including the Arc and one in Germany, and he could easily go to Hong Kong or Japan if we haven't achieved our objective beforehand."
