They're among the "best" processed foods that are widely consumed by---or marketed to--children, according to a group of 11 experts in heart disease, cancer, hypertension, dentistry, toxicology, pediatrics, and nutrition education.

, evaluated thousands of brandname foods for fat, saturated fat saturated fat, any solid fat that is an ester of glycerol and a saturated fatty acid. The molecules of a saturated fat have only single bonds between carbon atoms; if double bonds are present in the fatty acid portion of the molecule, the fat is said to be , cholesterol, sodium, sugar, fiber, and additives.

Its goal was to set standards that would encourage the food industry to produce healthier children's foods.

To earn a "Best" (*) rating, a food had to meet more than a half-dozen criteria. Among them:

* Fat. No more than 30 percent of calories or three grams per serving.

* Saturated fat. No more than ten percent of calories or one gram per serving.

* Sodium. No more than two milligrams per calorie or 140 mg per serving.

* Added sugar. No more than 20 percent of calories or four grams per serving.

* Food safety. No artificial colorings, aspartame aspartame: see sweetener, artificial.

About 100 foods qualified. Not a single cookie, frozen dinner or dessert, fast-food meal, granola bar, hot dog, or luncheon meat was among them. For those categories, the committee offered parents a list of .foods that were either "Second Best" (**) or, if there were none, "Best of a Bad Lot" (***).

The committee was headed by Marion Nestle of New York University New York University, mainly in New York City; coeducational; chartered 1831, opened 1832 as the Univ. of the City of New York, renamed 1896. It comprises 13 schools and colleges, maintaining 4 main centers (including the Medical Center) in the city, as well as the .
