CORRECTION (ran 4/21/04): In a story about the University of Oregon's Ultimate Frisbee team on page B1 Monday, Justin Grishkin's name was misspelled.

, fondly known to disc players as "the spirit of the game," is what first drew Wiggins to Ultimate. The concept embraces sportsmanship, fair play and friendship between opponents, he said.

For example, there are no referees in Ultimate. Any contact is a foul, and players call their own fouls.

Speed is helpful but not always the most important quality to playing well, Wiggins said. "You don't have to be the best athlete and do a 4.2 in the 40 (yard dash), but you do get a good workout," he said.

One of his teammates, Justine Grishkin, said the UO team has the right mix of wily veterans and "athletic rookies."

"There's no better feeling than sprinting 70 yards, catching the disc, beating my guy in the air to score," he said.

The men's team prevailed over seven other college club teams, and the women's squad bested three other schools to win the weekend tournament. The UO teams now advance to a regional tournament May 8-9 in Corvallis.

Dengler and Wiggins say they like the Ducks' chances of advancing to the Ultimate Players Association college championships May 28-30 in Seattle. The UO's men's team won the national title in 1992 and advanced to the Final Four in 2001.
