Ducks add bodies for trophy dash.Byline: From news service reports The University of Oregon men's track and field team will take a few more potential point scorers into the NCAA Championships, thanks to provisional qualifiers added to the field on Tuesday. The Ducks, the Pac-10 Conference champions, added both men's relays and two distance runners, Eric Logsdon in the 5,000 and Kyle Alcorn in the 3,000 steeplechase. They will join a large contingent of UO athletes who already had qualified for the NCAAs, set for June 8-11 at Sacramento. In all, 15 Oregon competitors will make the trip. The Oregon women's team also added three athletes in the field events - juniors Roslyn Lundeen in the javelin, Britany Hinchcliffe in the hammer and Lauryn Jordan in the heptathlon. They bring the number of UO women athletes invited to seven, led by Sarah Malone, the Newberg product who was seeded second in the nation after her 186-foot, 10-inch effort in winning the West Regional title last weekend at Hayward Field. Both teams will have a little different look in their lineups as they face the national meet. The men's team will have Galen Rupp, the former prep standout at Central Catholic who joined the Ducks midway through the season, concentrate on the 10,000 meters. He also had qualified in the 5,000. Rupp is seeded fourth in the 10,000. Also, hurdler A.K. Ikwuakor will be dropped from the 400 hurdles so he can focus on the 110 highs and the 4x400 relay, on which he runs the third leg. That 4x400 relay team was seeded fifth in the nation, trailing only some of the NCAA's elite sprint programs - No. 1 Florida, followed in order by Baylor, Arizona State and LSU. Oregon's Travis Anderson, Kedar Inico, Ikwuakor and Matt Scherer have a best time of 3 minutes, 3.27 seconds. Florida recorded a 3:02.23 mark to lead qualifying, with the next three all under the 3:03 mark - Baylor at 3:02.58, ASU at 3:02.77 and LSU at 3:02.95. The addition of the men's 4x100 relay also puts sophomore Jordan Kent and junior Richard Del Rincon into the NCAAs. That team's inclusion also makes for a busy few days for Inico and Scherer, who are on both relay teams and are individual competitors in the 400. Inico and Scherer were the 11th and 12th listed qualifiers, respectively, in the 400. Two other Ducks are among the men's top seeds. Long jumper Leonidas Watson is third with a mark of 26 feet, 3/4 inch, and junior Eric Mitchum was fourth in the 110 high hurdles with a 13.56 time. Watson trails Arizona State's Trevell Quinley (26-9 3/4 ) and Indiana's Aarik Wilson (26-3). Mitchum is behind three Southeastern Conference standouts - Tennessee's Aries Merritt (13.38), Mississippi's Antwon Hicks (13.42) and Florida's Josh Walker (13.48). The women's team also got Bree Fuqua into the discus competition. She also was guaranteed a spot in the shot put. |
