Dube spent nearly a decade building the Marist High School baseball team into a yearly championship contender. He will now try to deliver that same level of consistency at Thurston.

Dube, 38, was hired earlier this summer as the Colts' new head baseball coach, leaving the Spartans after nine seasons.

"I pretty much did as much as a person could do over at Marist and figured it was time to finish up there and move somewhere different," Dube said. "Thurston has always had great kids and in my years of coaching, I always thought they had great athletes at this school."

Dube, in his first high school head coaching job, led the Spartans to a 86-44 record in the Sky-Em League in his nine years. However, since 2002, when Dube guided Marist into the postseason for the first time in 18 years, the Years, The

He has taken Marist to the playoffs in each of the past six seasons.

The Spartans reached the semifinals in 2006, and last spring they advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals.

Though the Colts play in Class 5A, Dube said moving up a classification was a nonfactor in his decision to leave Marist.

"You know, I didn't think about it that way at all," Dube said. "The Sky-Em League has been a great league with great coaches. Steve Smith at Pleasant Hill has been a mentor Mentor, in Greek mythology

"I don't think there's a huge talent difference. The big difference is there is closer to 1,000 kids for some of the schools, so you have a bigger opportunity to get more kids involved and have a little bit better talent and a deeper roster."

Dube admitted part of his decision to leave Marist - a private school - was to get into the public school system and the Public Employees Retirement System. He will be a full-time teacher at Thurston.

"My wife and I, we looked at the possibility of moving out of the area, but we decided we were going to stick around here and Thurston was No. 1 on my list and it just so happened they had an opening," Dube said. "All the pieces just fell into place. They've got a great administration here, and they're trying to turn this baseball program around. It was the perfect time to come on over."

Dube replaced Mike Michel Michel

"I haven't had a chance to do much," Dube said. "I was hired pretty late, and we had already started our summer season at Marist. We co-hosted the state tournament with Pleasant Hill. But I did have the opportunity to come over and watch the guys from Thurston in the D-1, D-2 teams, and then I watched the guys playing on the Legion legion, large unit of the Roman army. I've had the opportunity to meet most of the boys who are going to be playing baseball, and I'm really excited to work with them. They seemed like fine, young gentlemen, eager and ready to get going, and that excites me because so am I."

The Colts will return four sophomores and a one junior from 2007 who earned all-league honors and helped the Colts finish tied for third place in the Midwestern League.

"There are a lot of talented players coming back next year," Dube said. "If everything goes right, we should have a very nice year."
