Drydocks gets turret boost in Dubai.

A steel cutting ceremony was held at Drydocks World Dubai for the turret of Shell's pioneering Prelude floating liquefied natural gas liquefied natural gas: see under natural gas.

The turret at more than 90 m in height and 30 m in diameter and weighing 11.500 tonnes is the world's largest. Senior personnel from Shell, Technip, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and SBM offshore attended the ceremony. The turret will be built as six modules at the Dubai shipyard and shipped to Samsung Heavy Industry's yard in Korea, where these will be integrated into the FLNG facility, once it is built. Drydocks World had earlier been awarded the turret building contract by SBM Offshore as part of its contract with Technip for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC (1) (Entertainment PC) See HTPC.

Once constructed the FLNG facility will be towed to location where it will be permanently moored in 250 m deep water through the turret, providing weathervaning capabilities, and a 4 x 4 mooring system. The FLNG facility and its mooring system have been designed to withstand extreme weather conditions including a Category 5 cyclone.

"The shipyard has extensive experience in managing projects of great significance to the world oil and gas industry. It is indeed a matter of great pride to be associated with this historic project, the scope and scale of which is massive and has the capability of defining future developments in the offshore gas industry. Our excellent technical capabilities and stringent adherence to safety and quality standards has enabled us to participate actively in building a major part of the FLNG facility," said Khamis Juma Buamim, chairman of Drydocks World and Maritime World.

Meanwhile, Drydocks World signed an agreement with Exmar Shipmanagement, a company that offers high-end ship management services to the maritime industry.

The two companies hope to strengthen their relationship on the basis of the new agreement and Exmar Shipmanagement is expected to consider Drydocks World as a preferred yard for all its ship repair and maintenance needs in the Middle East region. It would translate into an increased volume of business and further enhance co-operation over the near to medium term.

Drydocks World has received 13 vessel repair orders from Exmar Shipmanagement, primarily gas carriers -- both Liquefied Petroleum Gas liquefied petroleum gas or LPG, mixture of gases, chiefly propane and butane, produced commercially from petroleum and stored under pressure to keep it in a liquid state.  (LPG LPG: see liquefied petroleum gas.

Buamim said recently the Dubai shipyard's business in repairs and conversion was very successful and capacity would be expanded. As well as the turret, the shipyard is developing two modular conversions for the Gulf of Mexico Noun 1.
