is a new dry-ice blast-cleaning system for molds that is available from Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd Husky Injection Moulding Systems Ltd was founded by Robert Schad, a German immigrant who came to Canada in 1951 with $25 borrowed from an uncle and a letter from a family friend by the name of Albert Einstein. ., Bolton, Ont. Developed by Husky and CAE (1) (Computer-Aided Engineering) Software that analyzes designs which have been created in the computer or that have been created elsewhere and entered into the computer.  Alpheus, a maker of dry-ice blasting systems in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Power DFX reportedly cleans high-cavitation molds in 80% less time than manual methods and eliminates the use of hazardous solvents or disposable wipes. Mold components also do not need to be removed for cleaning. Husky's initial market is PET pre-form tooling, but the system has wide application potential.

The portable system shaves dry-ice blocks, nuggets, or pellets into fine particles. Power DFX then draws the fine particles through small venturi venturi

nozzles into a stream of compressed air compressed air, air whose volume has been decreased by the application of pressure. Air is compressed by various devices, including the simple hand pump and the reciprocating, rotary, centrifugal, and axial-flow compressors. . The dry-ice spray vaporizes when it hits the mold surface, creating microscopic "explosions" of solid [CO.sub.2] into gas that "flushes away" mold residues, according to Husky sources. The system can clean out injection mold vents and hot-runner manifolds. It can also strip resin from plasticating screws and remove sticky residues from blow molds.

Power DFX uses only 25 cu ft/hr of compressed air and 0.80 lb/hr of dry ice, about one-third the amounts used by other dry-ice systems, according to Husky. It reportedly cleans hard-to-reach areas better than competing systems.
