Drunken driving arrests increase.

Oregon State Police troopers Troopers in the United States civilian police forces usually refer to members of state highway patrols, state patrols, or state police agenciess.  made 23 percent more drunken driving arrests over the long holiday weekend than they did last year.

Troopers around the state arrested 54 people from Friday to Monday, compared with 44 arrests last year.

In addition, four people died in two separate traffic crashes over the Christmas weekend this year. That's on par with the average number of fatalities reported during the 78-hour holiday weekend during the past 10 years, state police said.

Three people died in a crash near Redmond about 11:45 p.m. Friday. One person died in a wreck near Salem shortly after midnight Monday. Both crashes remained under investigation this week.

Now, troopers are bracing for New Year's celebrations.

The Oregon Department of Transportation has said that for the past 10 years, alcohol has been a factor in 41 percent of Oregon traffic deaths during the two-week holiday season.

Six people died in five wrecks during last year's 78-hour New Year's holiday period, and troopers arrested 88 people for driving under the influence of intoxicants.

State police warned motorists not to drink and drive, but to designate a sober driver instead. The agency urged party hosts to make sure guests don't drive home drunk and to help arrange taxi or shuttle service for those who need it.
