Psychiatrist Sandra C. Latham of the Behavioral Health Behavioral health was first used in the 1980's to name the combination of the fields mental health and substance abuse. As an example, an organization serving both mental health and substance abuse clients might refer to its practice as behavioral health or  Research Center of the Southwest in Albuquerque and her coworkers interviewed 612 women and 493 men, ages 23 to 54, about 5 years after their drunk-driving convictions. About 90 percent of the participants reported having abused alcohol at some time in their lives, Latham's team reports in the October ARCHIVES OF GENERAL PSYCHIATRY Archives of General Psychiatry is a monthly professional medical journal published by the American Medical Association. Archives of General Psychiatry publishes original, peer-reviewed articles about psychiatry, mental health, behavioral science and related fields. . About one-third of both the men and women also cited past bouts of illicit-drug dependence. For those who had abused alcohol, half the women and one-third of the men had suffered other mental ailments, mainly post-traumatic stress disorder post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mental disorder that follows an occurrence of extreme psychological stress, such as that encountered in war or resulting from violence, childhood abuse, sexual abuse, or serious accident.  and major depression. --B.B.
