Massachusetts Massachusetts (măsəch`sĭts), most populous of the New England states of the NE United States.  is set to join seven other states that offer drug-free environments for adolescents with addiction addiction: see drug addiction and drug abuse.  problems. At these recovery schools, students can complete their education without being tempted to return to abusing drugs.

Along with offering a standard high-school or college curriculum, recovery schools provide ongoing post-treatment support. All students who enroll are required to be sober for 30 days prior to admission. The schools also help students transition from high school into college, a career or another high school.

For students enrolled in recovery schools, the one-year relapse rate is only 20 percent, compared to 90 percent among teenagers who return to their old schools.

About 2S such schools and 12 colleges have been established around the country in states that include California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.
