Drug Purchase: Amgen Inc. will acquire Fremont-based drug development partner Abgenix Inc. for about $2.2 billion in cash. Thousand Oaks-based Amgen has been providing capital and clinical trial expertise to Abgenix for two of its experimental drugs, a potential blockbuster block·bust·er

 cancer treatment called panitumumab Panitumumab (ABX-EGF) is a fully human monoclonal antibody specific to the EGF receptor (see illustration)[1]. It was FDA approved for the first time in September 2006, for the "the treatment of EGFR-expressing metastatic colorectal cancer with disease progression"  and a bone-building osteoporosis osteoporosis (ŏs'tēō'pərō`sĭs), disorder in which the normal replenishment of old bone tissue is severely disrupted, resulting in weakened bones and increased risk of fracture; osteopenia  treatment called denosumab.
