A search revealed the drug wrapped around her waist. She told police she was forced into smuggling by a lover who owed money to gangsters.

In court yesterday she said: "It was the first time. It won't happen again. I'm sorry."

She wept as the judge ignored her plea for mercy. But two hours later she married her English boyfriend, writer Max Allen, in prison.

Turkish lawyers said she got off lightly. The prosecutor had demanded a 12-year sentence for her and a Turkish accomplice accomplice: see accessory. .

Her jailing came as a blow to her children, Ione, 10, and Keir, seven, who live with her first husband, Ian, in Barnstaple, Devon.

McKinnon's lawyer said last night that she would appeal.
