Resurfacing work is due to start on the westbound carriageway carriageway
Noun

1. Brit the part of a road along which traffic passes in one direction: the westbound carriageway of the M4

2.
of the Blaydon Viaduct viaduct (vī`ədŭkt') [Lat.,=road conveyor], type of bridge for carrying a highway or railroad over a valley, over low ground, or over a road.  in Gateshead.

The road will be closed to traffic from August 24 for up to 11 weeks so that the existing road surface can be removed.

A new waterproof membrane will be applied to the concrete bridge structure and a new surface will be laid on the viaduct, which carries the A695 Blaydon Highway over the Newcastle to Carlisle railway line.

The work has been forced on Gateshead Council after repeated problems with potholes, particularly during the winter. Westbound traffic will be diverted via the slip road to Chainbridge Road, then over the level crossing before turning right on to Blaydon roundabout.

Some minor delays are expected, mostly during the evening rush hour.
