Drivers face A1 delays.


DRIVERS face a road headache from tomorrow as work on the A1 begins.

In a bid to keep chaos to a minimum, other roadworks in Gateshead are being suspended.

Nick Clennett, head of transport and highways for Gateshead Council, said: "We have taken the decision to suspend all roadworks on key routes while the Highways Agency's works are underway.

We don't want motorists to be delayed any more than is strictly necessary.

"This will affect all council works and those by the utility companies, other than genuine emergencies.'' Among the roadworks to be suspended will be the construction of a new bus lane on the A692 Lobley Hill Lobley Hill is located on the outskirts of Gateshead in the North East of England. It has an approximate population of 8,000. It is surrounded by old coal pits and has a beautiful park, called Watergate. Education
There are two schools in Lobley Hill.
 Road, which will stop until August 17.

The disruption on the A1 is expected to last nine weeks as improvements are carried out to Allerdene Bridge, which crosses over the East Coast main railway line.
