Driver cited for striking police captain on street.

FITCHBURG - An off-duty city police captain was injured in·jure

Police Capt. Mark W. Louney said he was carried 20 feet on the hood of the car after the impact.

The driver of the 1977 Chevrolet, Gerry Martel, 80, of Fitchburg, told investigating officers he had been blinded by solar glare Solar glare is a visual phenomenon caused by strong sunlight reflecting off a glass or other reflective surface causing an exaggerated lighting effect. Mr. Martel was not immediately cited in the incident, but Capt. Philip J. Kearns requested further investigation by Sgt. Harry N. Hess of the traffic unit. Sgt. Hess interviewed Mr. Martel this week and was told that glare had played a role in the crash.

"I advised him that in such an instance it is incumbent upon the operator of a motor vehicle to slow, or perhaps even stop, his vehicle if the environmental conditions have so greatly reduced visibility," Sgt. Hess wrote.

Mr. Martel was issued a citation Citation
