G-round has been broken for a 406-car, $11 million parking garage between 162nd and163rd Streets just north of Jamaica Avenue Jamaica Avenue or The Ave., as it is called by locals, is a major avenue in the New York City borough of Queens, New York, United States. Jamaica Avenue starts off from Fulton Street (replacing East New York Avenue) in the East New York neighborhood in Brooklyn, and goes  that its non-profit operator asserts "will substantially add to the availability of convenient, affordable parking in Jamaica Center.

"Having these parking facilities attracts more shoppers and others having business in Downtown Jamaica and helps counter the appeal of free parking in malls in nearby Nassau County Nassau County is the name of two counties in the United States of America:

," continued Lamont R. Bailey, Vice Chairman of Greater Jamaica Development Corporation (GJDC) and an officer of Jamaica First Parking, the entity recently formed by GJDC to build, upgrade and operate parking lots and garages in the area as a means of fostering economic growth.

The three-story garage, expected to be completed in a year, will have entrances on162nd and 163rd Street and 5,000-square-feet of retail space on the ground floor. "The stores probably will be small businesses, serving people who live and work in the community," Bailey noted.

The garage is part of a planned mid-block development, between 161st and 163rd streets just north of Jamaica Avenue that includes the first market-rate housing to be constructed in Jamaica Center in three decades. The first phase of the housing, called Yorkside Towers, will open during the summer. The garage project received $5 million in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

Bailey said the second phase includes upgrading and improving the 500-car, former municipal garage on Parsons Boulevard north of Jamaica Avenue that should begin this summer.

Carlisle Towery, President of Greater Jamaica Development Corporation, said: "These additions and improvements will help solve the off-street parking shortage in the central section of Downtown Jamaica. But there remains a great need for more parking facilities here, and we hope the City will work to reduce the number of on-street spaces used by public agencies for all-day employee parking."
