IF any Government really wanted to tackle the alcohol problem in this country, the first step should be to stop giving alcoholics pounds 30 a week extra in their benefits, presumably pre·sum·a·ble

Setting a minimum price for alcohol won't make any difference to the irresponsible, troublemaking drinkers that are a blight blight, general term for any sudden and severe plant disease or for the agent that causes it. The term is now applied chiefly to diseases caused by bacteria (e.g., bean blights and fire blight of fruit trees), viruses (e.g., soybean bud blight), fungi (e.g.  on our society, but stiffer sentences for those who cause trouble by their abuse of alcohol certainly would.

2. Being a hypocrite: a hypocritical rogue.
 of any Government to complain about the devastation caused by excessive drinking to health and society, when they appear to encourage it by financing it, and do very little to punish those who commit crimes because of it.
