High River is pleased to announce the year-end results from its 1200 square kilometre Square kilometre (U.S. spelling: square kilometer), symbol km², is a decimal multiple of the SI unit of surface area, the square metre, one of the SI derived units. 1 km² is equal to:
A region of western Africa between the Sahara Desert and the Gulf of Guinea. It was largely controlled by colonial powers until the 20th century. West African adj. & n. . Surface trenching and diamond drilling Diamond Drilling is a highly specialized industry used for mineral exploration around the world. Most commonly using wireline and core bits with diamond encrusted matrix. To drill holes to max depths of twelve thousand feet, for the recovery of core used in verifying mineral on the northern part of the Taparko Structure has confirmed the presence of a new gold zone. Zone 5 was previously identified in very limited historic trenching, and by High River's geologic prospecting and rock sampling which produced high grade gold values (press release December 17/96). Ten shallow (25 metre vertical depth) diamond drill holes have tested this new gold zone. Nine holes at 40 metre intervals have cored the zone over a 320 metre strike length, and one hole stepped out an additional 200 metres along strike to the north. All ten holes have intersected significant gold-rich mineralization Mineralization The process by which the body uses minerals to build bone structure. This systematic work at 40 metre intervals brings the zone length to 400 metres, with the zone remaining open along strike. The K Zone is another recently discovered area of mineralization, located at the north end of Zone 2 and approximately 800 metres north of the GT Zone (press releases December 17/96, September 6/96, July 10/96 and June 20/96). The remaining three holes ranged from 2.03 to 2.68 grams of gold per tonne over 1 to 4 metres. Trenching in this zone has produced values up to 12.57 grams of gold per tonne over 10.1 metres. A deeper hole (TAP 111) to the 150 metre level to test the northern portion of Zone 2 adjacent to the K Zone returned 3.72 grams of gold per tonne over 5.35 metres. Zone 3 is located immediately south of Zone 5 and has been tested with only four shallow holes to a 25 metre depth. Hole TAP 115 assayed 7.65 grams of gold per tonne over 10.1 metres, Hole TAP 119 returned 8.47 grams of gold per tonne over 5.75 metre, with the remaining holes each returning 0.24 and 1.44 grams of gold per tonne over 7 metres. Surface trenching on this zone returned values of 6.1 grams of gold per tonne over 11.4 metres and 8.8 grams of gold per tonne over 5.3 metres. One hole (TAP 120) drilled 80 metres to the south of the previous southernmost hole of Zone 1 returned 4.73 grams of gold per tonne over 3.25 metres; an adjacent trench trench: see ocean. produced 6.48 grams of gold per tonne over 5.1 metres. This is the southernmost hole drilled on the Taparko structure and indicates the continuation of gold mineralization to the south. With the completion of this hole, High River has drilled at intervals coming or happening with intervals between; now and then. See also: Interval along a strike length of 4.2 kilometres and has, to date, identified promising gold mineralization in at least six zones. Continuing regional soil sampling, geologic prospecting and rock sampling has outlined two new areas of interest in the southern part of the property. This brings to nine, the number of targets identified by the reconnaissance programme for further detailed work. During January, compilation and analysis of the exploration to date on the Taparko Project will take place, and diamond drilling will recommence Re`com`mence´ v. i. 1. To commence or begin again. 2. Geologic prospecting and reconnaissance will continue, and the areas resulting from this work will be advanced to the drilling stage. Production continues to improve at High River's 50 percent-owned New Britannia Mine in Snow Lake, Manitoba Snow Lake is a small Manitoba town located 685 km north of Winnipeg at the end of Provincial Road 392. The main industry is and always has been mining; currently with one mine producing Zinc. Mining Mining is and always has been Snow Lake's major industry. . Production of the mine for 1996 totalled approximately 68,000 ounces with production for the month of December being 7,500 ounces. The 1997 programme and forecast for production is 85,000 ounces, of which 82,000 ounces have been forward sold at an average price of US$ 440 per ounce. In addition to the New Britannia Mine and the Taparko project, High River is the largest shareholder in the Russian mining company, Buryatzoloto, which operates two mines with total gold reserves exceeding six million ounces. Buryatzoloto's production for 1996 is expected to exceed 75,000 ounces, and the recent completion of a financing for US$ 30 million provided by the EBRD EBRD See: European Bank for Reconstruction and Development , High River, Gerald Metals and institutional investors Institutional Investor A non-bank person or organization that trades securities in large enough share quantities or dollar amounts that they qualify for preferential treatment and lower commissions. will facilitate increased production and improved efficiencies (press release November 11/96). High River and its partner, Focal Resources Ltd., will commence a US$ 5 million exploration programme including diamond drilling on their properties in Nicaragua in the very near future. Airborne surveying and drilling contracts have been awarded. CONTACT: High River Gold Mines Ltd.
