Drexel University Drexel University, at Philadelphia, Pa.; coeducational; founded 1891 by Anthony J. Drexel, opened 1892, chartered 1894 as Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry. It was renamed Drexel Institute of Technology in 1936 and gained university status in 1970.
What: Drexel University and the National Commission for
Cooperative Education (NCCE) will host a national
corporate symposium that will focus on how to develop a
highly skilled and diverse global workforce in a changing
economy.
Who: Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President Anthony
Santomero will speak on the value of education in
strengthening the nation's economy. Representatives from
Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson and Unisys will participate
in a panel. Drexel President Constantine Papadakis and
NCCE President Paul Stonley will host a panel of
presidents from co-op colleges and universities around the
country that will discuss the future of cooperative
education as it relates to businesses and economic
development.
When: Tuesday, June 22, 2004 from 10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Background: Cooperative education programs alternate periods of
full-time work and classroom study, providing students
with paid employment and hands-on professional experience
as an integral part of their college education. Founded in
1919, Drexel's co-op includes 4,800 students who hold
co-op positions with more than 1, 500 employer
organizations in 42 states and 20 international locations.
