Dream table for an artist.

Dream table for an artist A serious dabbler in several art forms, Helen Gray needs work surfaces at a variety of angles--including horizontal. Since she sometimes works for 4 hours at a time, she also wanted a footrest. Now, after 40 years of making do, she finally has what she considers the perfect table. She calls it her "one-of-a-kind adjustable artist's table."

Even if your interests don't include oil paints or sumi inks, the table has potential as a drawing or drafting surface, a student's desk, or a sewing table.

Mrs. Gray herself came up with the basic design. Her husband, Bill, then constructed it over a couple of weekends. Held together with 3-1/2- and 5-1/2-inch carriage bolts, the frame is composed entirely of 2-by-4s. The top is a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood covered with plastic laminate. On the underside, strips of 3/4-inch plywood are glued and nailed on to give the top's perimeter its 1-1/2-inch thickness. These edges are also trimmed with laminate.

Two 2-inch butt hinges under the top's front (or bottom) lip allow it to tilt up. Each of two independent 1-by-3s is notched at one end; the notch fits around the top rail at the back of the frame, and the 1-by-3's other end catches one of several small cleats glued and nailed to the underside of the tabletop.
