Dr. McNamara also serves as Assistant Professor and Medical Director of the Center for Healthcare Informatics at the University of Kansas The University of Kansas (often referred to as KU or just Kansas) is an institution of higher learning in Lawrence, Kansas. The main campus resides atop Mount Oread.  Medical Center and has more than 12 years of experience in medicine and IT product development focusing on technology-based solutions for the improvement of the clinical process and patient care quality.

Prior to his affiliation with HealthGate, Dr. McNamara worked with Cerner Corporation as Vice President of Content Development. He also founded Applied Informatics, LLC a software development firm focusing on consumer informatics, medication safety and electronic medical publishing.

Prior to these endeavors, he led product development and research initiatives for seven years at a start-up pharmaceutical information company (later acquired by Cerner Corporation) that has become a nationally-prominent provider of electronic drug information and clinical decision support tools.

Dr. McNamara holds two patents on computerized drug dosage and electronic prescription development and has developed large-scale classification system and relational database of pharmaceutical products, a set of XML-based content management and production tools for independent physician reviewers and an application service provider (ASP) business model for business-to-business distribution of healthcare information. He also has won two awards for Small Business Innovator Research from the National Institute for Health (NIH "Not invented here." See digispeak.

Dr. McNamara has testified before the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS NCVHS National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics ) on proposed transaction and code set standards that have since been adopted as final rules under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996, Public Law 104-191) Also known as the "Kennedy-Kassebaum Act," this U.S. law protects employees' health insurance coverage when they change or lose their jobs (Title I) and provides standards for patient health, , and on terminology and transaction standards related to pharmaceuticals.
