A living arrangement in which people with special needs, especially older people with disabilities, reside in a facility that provides help with everyday tasks such as bathing, dressing, and taking medication.
 Management (CALM) announced today that Dr. Stuart Shapiro has been selected to serve as the long term care and assisted living advocacy group's new President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. .

Dr. Shapiro, a resident of Bala Cynwyd, PA, has served more than three decades in a wide range of public and private sector positions. In the public sector, he has served as Commissioner of Health for the City of Philadelphia, Senior Staff Member of the U.S. Senate Sub-Committee on Health and Scientific Research, and Deputy Health Commissioner for the state of Massachusetts. In the private sector, Dr. Shapiro has led turnarounds in a variety of public and privately-held companies. He has also provided innovative leadership with large non profit organizations.

"PHCA has a special responsibility to represent the needs and concerns of all seniors in the Commonwealth. With Pennsylvania ranking third nationally in the number of seniors, and with Pennsylvanians 85 and older being our fastest growing demographic group, it remains vital that we continue our work with Governor Rendell and the General Assembly in a manner that strengthens our entire care continuum for the benefit of every frail, elderly and disabled citizen," stated Dr. Shapiro. "Our public policy objective will always be to ensure every Pennsylvania senior has ready and certain access to the care setting most appropriate to them and their condition - whether it is facility-based care, assisted living care, home and community-based care, or the increasing number of other options now prevalent in the health care marketplace."

Added Dr. Shapiro, "Governor Rendell and the General Assembly, to their credit, take very seriously the need to guarantee that seniors throughout the Commonwealth receive high quality care in all settings, and PHCA intends to work closely with this Administration and the State Legislature to ensure this remains a priority."

Dr. Shapiro earned a medical degree with honors from the State University of New York (body) State University of New York - (SUNY) The public university system of New York State, USA, with campuses throughout the state.  at Buffalo and a Masters Degree in Healthcare Management from Harvard University. He completed his postgraduate medical education at the Massachusetts General and Peter Bent Brigham Hospitals in Boston.
