Martin Luther King Jr. has touched our hearts and changed our minds with his words. Even today we can learn something from his messages of nearly 30 years ago. In our current crisis with Afghanistan I believe that we can better ourselves by acting upon the words in Dr. King's "A Time to Break the Silence" speech. In this sermon he spoke not of heaven or God, but of our problems here on earth, particularly war. He wanted to teach us that we can enlighten en·light·en tr.v. en·light·ened, en·light·en·ing, en·light·ens 1. For example, if a nation should lay a very heavy tariff on American goods, the United States would be justified in return in laying heavy duties on the manufactures and and hate to rule our lives. Can we really change the world? I believe we can, but only by listening to the messages spoken by our elders and looking long and hard at our mistakes from the past. It is often difficult to speak out against your government and state your own opinion. Martin Luther King states this clearly in his address, but encourages us to overcome our difficulties in order to better ourselves and our planet. I agree that this is one of the first steps we must take towards creating a better earth for us to live upon. How else can we fight greed and hate? With hope, determination and an open mind. We must learn to respect our neighbors more than our clothing, our peers more than our cars, and just as Dr. King said, shift to a "person-oriented" society. How can we wish to succeed as a total race if we value a dollar bill more than a human being? If our life is to improve, we must be the ones to change it. It will not happen quickly, and it will not be easy, but we can battle against militarism, racism and poverty and we can defeat them. Why not act upon Dr. King's words now? I think that if we turned his ideas into actions soon we could prevent a permanently bad relationship from developing between Afghanistan and America. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see a woman from Kabul and a man from Chicago walking hand-in-hand down the street not judging each other based on their skin color, religion or economic status? This is what we should dream for and this is what we should put our effort toward: a better place for every human, everywhere. I think that by applying Dr. King's ideas to our situation with Afghanistan we can enrich our minds, our relationships and our overall well-being. Dr. King's speech is not simply an utterance, but a beautifully woven tapestry tapestry, hand-woven fabric of plain weave made without shuttle or drawboy, the design of weft threads being threaded into the warp with fingers or a bobbin. of opinions that can help us put a purpose to life and make a difference. So now let us turn toward the future, keep our minds open and take a step toward a new world. - Roseann Proctor, eighth grade Jefferson Middle School |
