"Decision-Quality and the Care of the Patient"
The Society of General Internal Medicine represents
general internists, including many primary care
doctors, based at academic medical centers. This
session will focus on the implications of the striking
variations in clinical practices found in different
hospital market areas and the implications for
clinical care, including the challenges faced by
clinicians in bringing together professional knowledge
and patients' core values to improve health-related
decisions.
Dr. Wennberg is well known for his research in
practice variation, outcomes research, and in studies
of the importance of patient informed choice in
surgical decision-making.
Dr. Mulley has focused on the use of decision theory
and outcomes research to distinguish between warranted
and unwarranted variations in clinical practice, and
he is internationally recognized for his work on the
development of patient decision aids.
